As I enter my patient’s room, I gently say something like,
“Hi, I’m Sydney, and I’ll be taking care of your baby this shift. If you need anything at all, please let me know. I’m here for the next 12 hours, and I would be honored to answer any questions and support you and your baby throughout the night.”
I remember sitting in that NICU chair myself — for forty-six days — rocking my sweet baby girl, wondering when it would finally be her turn to come home.
The days were long and exhausting. Most were busy and chaotic, others painfully quiet and lonely. But every single one was filled with hope — the hope that one day, our time would come.
As a NICU mom, I poured every ounce of myself into my baby. I watched monitors. I learned machines. I memorized numbers. I advocated. I prayed. And somewhere along the way, I often forgot to take care of myself.
Now, as I begin a new travel assignment in Nebraska, I find myself standing on the other side of the chair — and I am constantly reminded of who I once was, watching new mothers do exactly what I once did: sitting quietly, bravely, loving fiercely.
So today, I want to share the words I wish someone had placed in my hands back then.
Daily Affirmations for NICU Moms:
You were made to mother this baby.
No one knows them like you do. You are their comfort, their safe place, and their whole entire world.
You are doing a beautiful job.
Even when the room is messy, the bottles need washing, and you are utterly exhausted — you are doing the best you can, and that is more than enough.
This chapter is only part of your story.
You and your baby are still writing a future filled with strength, love, and hope.
You are enough.
Not because you do everything perfectly, but because you show up with love every single day.
From one NICU mom to another — I see you. I was you. And you are stronger than you know.
If today feels heavy, let this be your reminder that you are not alone in this journey. Your love matters. Your presence matters. And whether you can feel it or not, you are making a difference every single moment you sit beside your baby. One breath, one prayer, one hour at a time — you are doing something truly extraordinary.
From Ivy’s Branch,
This space, these words, and this love exist because of a little girl who taught me the depth of strength, surrender, and unconditional love. If this met you in a quiet moment beside your baby’s bed, know that her legacy is still reaching — still comforting — still reminding mothers they are never alone.
