Every life is worthy. Every story is beautiful.

Together, let’s celebrate, inclusion, awareness, and the incredible individuals who remind us what true joy looks like.

Understanding Trisomy 21

Trisomy 21, also known as Down syndrome, is a genetic condition caused by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21. Instead of the typical 46 chromosomes, individuals with Down syndrome have 47.

Approximately 1 in every 700 babies born in the United States has  Down syndrome, making it the most common chromosomal condition in the country.

Down syndrome is not contagious — it is a congenital condition, meaning it is present from birth.

Types of Trisomies

There are three primary types of trisomies:

Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome)

Trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome)

Trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome)

Health and Development

Around 50% of individuals with Down syndrome are born with a congenital heart defect, though the type and severity vary widely.

Common physical features may include almond-shaped eyes, a single deep crease across the palm, and a flat nasal bridge — but every individual is beautifully unique.

Individuals with Down syndrome may experience developmental delays ranging from mild to moderate. With the right support, they learn, grow and thrive — attending school, forming meaningful relationships, working, and contributing to their communities in extraordinary and inspiring ways.
